Director of Black Diamonds – Gillian Samuel


illian’s background has been in the sport of baton twirling for the last 30 years, which involves a variety of dance, ballet, gymnastics, cheerleading and of course the art of baton twirling. Since an early age she has competed in local, National and International competitions – winning Miss Scotland in 1985.

She then progressed to become a coach and trained some 10 teams around the Lothian’s and Fife, training approximately 300 students each week. She used to hold regular training camps and seminars for students and coaches. Gillian was also one of the coaches for Team Scotland for the World Championships in 1990.

She qualified to become a judge with the Scottish Baton Twirling Association, and went on to form her own Scottish Region of the National Baton Twirling Association, of which she was Chairperson. Gillian liaised with coaches, judges and officials from all over the world. Her most accredited achievement was becoming a judge at the World Championships in Amsterdam in 1990 – where two of her students were also placed 5th and 6th in the world!


Since September 2008 Gillian has been coaching cheerleading in Edinburgh & the Lothian’s and is now Director of Black Diamonds. She is also actively working with Midlothian and Edinburgh Active Schools Programme and is keen to promote the sport of cheerleading in Scotland. Gillian sat her USASF (United States All Star Federation) credentialing exams in October 2008 and is now a fully qualified coach in:

  • USASF Stunts/Tumbling/Tosses Levels 1 – 5

Gillian has also been fortunate to have had some input into coaching Team Scotland this year for the ICU World Championships, which was extremely exciting and informative. She also had two of her own students selected for the team, which is a great achievement considering her team has only been established for a few years.
